Key Takeaways From This Article

  • The ranges below reflect the latest federal wage data (BLS 2025) for the three areas that make up AllStaff’s Northeast Ohio footprint: the Youngstown-Warren and Canton-Massillon metro areas plus surrounding rural NE Ohio.
  • Entry-level production labor in NE Ohio runs roughly $14 to $15 an hour, while experienced machine operators and welders reach the high $20s to low $30s.
  • Skilled trades pay the most of the six roles: industrial maintenance techs earn a median near $30 an hour, and experienced techs approach $38 to $39.
  • Office roles show a wide spread, from around $14 an hour at entry to roughly $28 to $31 for experienced bookkeepers and clerks.
  • The gap between entry and experienced pay is often $9 to $16 an hour, which is why retention, not the starting wage, usually decides your true labor cost.

Why Wage Ranges Beat a Single Average

If you have ever benchmarked pay against a single market average, you already know the problem. One number cannot tell you whether you are underpaying an experienced welder or overpaying for entry-level labor. A range can. For each role below we show three points: entry pay (the 10th percentile, roughly what new or lower-skilled workers earn), the median (the middle of the market), and experienced pay (the 90th percentile, what your most-skilled and tenured people command).

Reading a role as a range lets you place your own rates on the curve. If you are hiring at entry but expecting experienced output, the range shows the distance you are asking people to close, and it explains why those hires often do not stick.

Role Entry (10%) Median (50%) Experienced (90%)
Labor (General Production) $14.55 $19.10 $23.75
Machine Operator $14.85 $18.75 $26.30
Industrial Maintenance $22.15 $30.30 $38.50
Welder $19.50 $23.65 $30.55
General Admin (Office Support) $14.20 $20.55 $28.00
Payroll / Bookkeeper $16.00 $22.40 $31.05

Figures are approximate hourly base wages and do not include overtime, shift premiums, or benefits.

Manufacturing and Production Roles

General production labor is the most entry-heavy role on the list, with a NE Ohio median near $19.10 an hour, and experienced pay running to about $23.75. Because the entry band is narrow and turnover in these roles is high, even small differences in starting pay and reliability move availability quickly.

Machine operator is a slippery title, because it means different things from one company to the next. At one shop it is someone tending a single automated line, at another it is a setup-capable operator running several machines at once. That spread in how the role is defined is part of why the pay band is so wide. Across Northeast Ohio the median lands around $18.75 an hour, while experienced, setup-capable operators reach roughly $26.30. Most of that jump reflects setup skill, quality consistency, and the ability to run without close supervision, so where your own role falls in the range depends heavily on how much of that you expect from the person.

Skilled Trades Command a Premium

Industrial maintenance is the highest-paid role in this group. Median pay sits near $30.30 an hour, and experienced technicians approach $38.50. That premium reflects how hard these workers are to find: a strong maintenance tech keeps the whole line running, and the market prices that accordingly.

Welders span a wide band, from about $19.50 at entry to roughly $30.55 for experienced hands. Certifications and specialty processes, such as TIG or pipe welding, push workers toward the top of the range, so the same job title can carry very different pay depending on capability.

Administrative and Clerical Roles

General office support runs from around $14.20 an hour at entry to roughly $28 for experienced staff, with a median near $20.55. The spread reflects how much the title stretches, from basic clerical work up to a trusted office coordinator.

Payroll and bookkeeping roles pay a bit more, from about $16 at entry to roughly $31.05 for experienced staff, with a median near $22.40. Software fluency and compliance knowledge are the main drivers that move someone up the range.

What the Ranges Tell You About Hiring and Retention

Look across the six roles and one pattern stands out: the distance between entry and experienced pay is usually $9 to $16 an hour. That gap is really the value of experience, reliability, and skill. When a worker leaves, you do not just lose a body, you lose everything that moved them up that curve, and you restart at the bottom of it.

This is why the starting wage is rarely the number that decides your true labor cost. In a high-turnover environment, the recurring time and disruption of re-recruiting, re-onboarding, and re-training swamp small differences in hourly rate. Setting pay to the right point on the range and then keeping people is what actually protects your budget and your schedule.

How We Sourced These Numbers

The wage ranges come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) program, 2025 wage data, accessed through O*NET OnLine. To represent Northeast Ohio, we blended the three BLS areas that make up AllStaff’s service footprint: the Youngstown-Warren and Canton-Massillon metro areas, plus the surrounding North-Northeastern Ohio nonmetropolitan area (rural NE Ohio). Figures are rounded and reflect the specific federal occupation used for each role:

  • Labor (general production): laborers and freight, stock and material movers, hand (SOC 53-7062)
  • Machine Operator: packaging and filling machine operators and tenders (SOC 51-9111)
  • Industrial Maintenance: industrial machinery mechanics (SOC 49-9041)
  • Welder: welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers (SOC 51-4121)
  • General Admin (office support): secretaries and administrative assistants (SOC 43-6014)
  • Payroll / Bookkeeper: bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks (SOC 43-3031)

For transparency, here are the median hourly wages behind the blend, by service area:

Role Youngstown-Warren Canton-Massillon Rural NE Ohio
Labor (General Production) $19.97 $18.70 $18.57
Machine Operator $17.94 $17.96 $20.33
Industrial Maintenance $29.66 $31.65 $29.60
Welder $22.93 $24.29 $23.72
General Admin (Office Support) $19.99 $21.12 $20.47
Payroll / Bookkeeper $22.36 $22.12 $22.79

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in these wage ranges?

They are base hourly wages from the BLS OEWS program (2025 data). They do not include overtime, shift differentials, bonuses, or the cost of benefits, so the fully loaded cost of an employee is higher than the numbers shown.

Why show a range instead of one average?

Because a single average hides the two things employers most need to know: what it takes to attract entry-level workers and what it costs to keep experienced ones. Entry, median, and experienced pay together let you place a specific role on the market curve.

Which areas do these numbers cover?

They blend three BLS areas: the Youngstown-Warren and Canton-Massillon metro areas plus the surrounding rural North-Northeastern Ohio nonmetropolitan area. Together these cover AllStaff’s Northeast Ohio service footprint around its Alliance and Youngstown offices.

How current is this data?

These are the latest available BLS OEWS wage figures (2025 wage data), published and updated in 2026. BLS refreshes these once a year, so the ranges shift gradually rather than month to month.

How do I know what to pay for my specific role?

Market ranges are a starting point, not a prescription. The right rate depends on your shift, skill requirements, and how competitive your area is for that role. AllStaff can pull a custom wage snapshot for your exact positions.
